Gay Marriage

Republicans have made gay marriage a hot political topic this election, with talk of a constitutional amendment to define marriage. I favor gay marriage laws at the state-by-state level. However, I do not support efforts to force private employers to provide spousal benefits to gays. Here is why. ...

Legalize Marijuana

I have never used marijuana and don’t even know anyone who does. So how can I be so sure it is safe to make marijuana legal? The answer is simple. Legalizing marijuana has nothing to do with how safe or how harmful it may be. Lots of substances are harmful (like cyanide, and arsenic), yet BATF and DEA SWAT teams are not breaking down doors in the night looking for them. ...

Constitutional Wish List

The problem with our constitutional amendment process is that it is controlled by a federal government that has no desire to limit its own power. So the constitution isn’t about to be improved any time soon, but if it were, here are the amendments I would wish for. ...

Re-Importing Pharmaceuticals

At first glance, you would think that drug re-importation is ok. There is something intuitively wrong with a law preventing you from buying drugs in Canada. If that law was repealed, drug companies wouldn't like it, but they could respond by limiting Canadian supply to an amount that Canada might actually use. Surely Canada wouldn't sell us drugs that they need, and that were in short supply. ...

Gun Control

I support the second amendment to the federal constitution, which says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The wording affirms that the right to bear arms is a natural right, not granted, but simply recognized, by the constitution. This means that no state should have the power to infringe that right. ...

Social Security has Always been Bankrupt – Morally!

Consider the problem: some people retire in poverty, either because they don’t save enough for their retirement, or because their private pension plan fails. FDR’s 1935 New Deal solution was to force everyone into an Old-Age Survivor Disability Insurance (OASDI) plan, commonly called Social Security. Thank goodness we have a Constitution to limit such arbitrary authority of government - or so we thought. While much of the early New Deal legislation was declared unconstitutional, by 1937 the Supreme Court was so corrupted by progressive socialist ideology that it allowed Social Security to stand. ...

Medical Liability Insurance Crisis

President Bush has proposed a plan to lower medical liability insurance costs for doctors nation-wide, by placing caps on non-economic damages that doctors must pay when sued. Opponents claim it infringes on state authority. True, but the problem is that lawyers have taken control of the political process to legally plunder doctors. ...
